One of the ideas that has been the defining achievement of our times and is threatened more than ever before is the notion of a liberal world and one which epitomises this debate between the personal and political because so many of liberalism’s political achievements actually began as personal struggles. The other question which I suspect, will also be a consistent strand, is the balance between the personal and the political, and whether it is even possible anymore to distinguish between the two. Last week, I wrote about my effort to strike a balance between the personal and the literary while I am writing this newsletter and how I expect that to be a recurring theme.
